GPS Navigator Systems. How they operate.
GPS Navigators are becoming very popular. Many car rental companies are equipping their vehicles with GPS systems. Fire departments are using them for emergencies when necessary. They provide the coordinates for emergency helicopters. Also taxi drivers use them for navigation and safety reasons. They are very useful for hiking, or any outdoor excursion. They are great for boating.
There are 24 satellites orbiting the earth at all times. The satellites are solar powered. They make two rotations in one day. Three satellites are needed in order for the GPS to process this information. Four satellites will give you even more information. A satellite sends a signal, and the GPS receiver catches the signal. When a satellite sends a signal, the time is noted. When the GPS receiver receives the signal, that time is noted. Through this process it will tell the GPS receiver how far that satellite is. The distance from several satellites will determine your exact location. You will know your lattitude, longitude, and altitude. Is this accurate? According to the experts, the system is very accurate.
The satellite system was built by the U.S. Department of Defense. The use of this system is free to the public. The system will work worldwide.
The GPS market is growing like a wildfire. It is reported that the sales in one year amounted to billions of dollars, with no sign of letting up.
“Geocaching” is the latest craze. Just what is geocaching? An object is hidden. The players are told the coordinates of the object, or geocache. Using a GPS navigator, the geocache is found. Sort of a hide and seek game.
