On January 22, 2003, President George W. Bush traveled to St. Louis to discuss how his plan for jobs and economic growth would benefit small business owners. The President called on Congress to move quickly and act on his economic proposals to encourage the nation’s entrepreneurs, speed up economic growth, and generate new jobs for American workers.

At this event held in St. Louis, there was a canvas behind Bush in the JS Logistics warehouse. The canvas portrayed a bunch of boxes that read: Made In USA. There were also letters on the canvas that read: Strengthening America’s Economy.

In front of the area that Bush was to speak, there was a display of about nine boxes, stacked neatly, with a backdrop of blue clothed stage. Labels on all the boxes read: Made In USA.

Mr. Bush was probably unaware of the misrepresentation on the boxes. Fake “Made In USA” stickers had been taped over the stamped area that read: Made In China. Made In China apparently was not consistent with the theme of the day, which was promoting small business, and things made in America.

Those pesky reporters just had to pull one of the stickers off, and ask silly questions. And Claire Buchan, a White House spokesperson, just had to blame it on volunteer White House workers. Ooops! Faux pas of the day!
